Interactions between Convenience and Culture

Kawakami
When I was starting up the BoI institute, one of the focus points was on how convenience and culture interact to change how people think and feel. One time, I went to pick up my son during a gridlock, due to heavy snowfall- ambulances zooming around- I took my mobile just in case, even though I shouldn’t have. Son didn’t pick up when I called. I became overly anxious for no reason.

The media changes how we live, doesn’t it.
If we see something better, whatever that already exists seems so inferior and we can only accept the better. Whether “learning about something unknown” like this, is a source of sadness, might be
  • Tasting an exquisite sake and not being able to drink cheap sake anymore
  • Listened to high-quality music so listening with an iPod becomes a pain
  • Not wanting to watch a soccer match on a regular TV screen after seeing one on a high-definition screen.
If we refuse the situations above, I’m worried that we won’t be able to argue the extreme statement “it’s best to be ignorant”.
Kawakami
As an example that doesn’t fit the “best to be ignorant” idea, again about mobile phones, but how about being perceived as “untrustworthy” if someone isn’t constantly carrying a slightly bulky communication tool with them? If it’s not the person who changed, but the society and culture around them.

Yes, it’s a difficult problem.
Apparently, students nowadays challenge people if they don’t receive a reply within about 30 minutes, claiming that they’ve been ignored. The assumption that information reaches someone immediately is becoming rather unsettling.
In cases like this, does it become a discussion about online etiquette and literacy (As a tool, it has potential, but since the culture cannot keep up, we feel more trapped in this society)?

I’ve received this leaflet I’ve received this leaflet http://www.ristex.jp/examin/suggestion.html (OLD LINK ※) Perhaps we could make a topic out of these, like “Establishing climate change solutions in the local community/ living with the environment” or “Interactions between technology and society”.
